This year the Copa Colsanitas- Banco Santander reaches its Sixteenth consecutive edition and its ten th time as a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournament.

Growing year after year, after five tournaments as an ITF-Women's Circuit competition and eleven more in the WTA Tour have enabled the Copa Colsanitas to become consolidated as one of Latin America's most prestigious sports events.

The tournament started in 1993 as a professional ITF Satelite as a response to its goal of promoting women's tennis, growing year after year, and has now achieved Tier III status.

Fifteenth Copa Colsanitas

   

Copa Colsanitas celebrated its fifteen years of life taking a further step to consolidate now as a social event in Colombia. The tournament brought together major figures in the world of entertainment, politics and private enterprise. The final tournament of the XV Copa Colsanitas-Banco Santander was among Italian players and this time the title went to Roberta Vinci. His compatriot Tatiana Garbin, who had come as a great favorite had to resign themselves to be with the caption after having to withdraw due to illness during the second set of their last match.

Fortenth Colsanitas Cup: 

    The spaniard Lourdes Domínguez, 62 WTA and seed 6 of the tournament, defeat the 16 WTA, italian Flavia Pennetta, and became championship of the 14th edition of the la Copa Colsanitas-Seguros Bolívar, of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour played in the Club Campestre El Rancho. The spaniard surprised when defeated in the final to Pennetta, champion player in 2006, top-favorite in 2007 and 16 WTA.

The Copa Colsanitas-Seguros Bolívar 2005 allowed to an italian player reached the colombian fans heart. With her smile and with her tennis, Flavia Pennetta got the love of the fans who joined her since her first match until the last one. Flavia, who arrived to the tournament as 35th world best player, won the tournament. Fabiola Zuluaga, the colombian player, reached the semifinal. The big surprise in the tournament was the spaniard Lourdes Domínguez, who played the qualifying draw and reached the final. Another colombian player, Catalina Castaño, reached the quarter final.

The Copa Colsanitas Seguros Bolívar was a big success in Colombia. The fans enjoyed with a new tittle for the local player, Fabiola Zuluaga, who, one month before, reached her first semifinal in a Grand Slam Tournament: Australian Open. Fabiola capture in 2004 in Bogotá one more championship, the fourth in WTA Tour in her career. Spain was again in the singles final with María Antonia Sánchez-Lorenzo.

The comeback of Colombian Fabiola Zuluaga

   

In 2002, the Colsanitas Cup rallied the Colombian audience around the return of local player Fabiola Zuluaga to the world circuit. A right shoulder injury kept the Colombian player away from the courts. However, she came in full force for her comeback, as she won the cup for the third time. Players such as Katarina Srebotnik from Slovenia, Paola Suárez from Argentina, and Cristina Torrens-Valero from Spain were the singles-rounds highlights. The team Paola Suárez-Virginia Ruano Pascual (from Spain) – the latter had just won at Roland Garros – was the main attraction of the doubles tournament.

Paola Suárez returns to the podium

   

This year's edition of the Colsanitas Cup was a Tier III tournament. Local fans were disappointed by the announcement that Fabiola Zuluaga, the top Colombian player at the time would not participate due to injury. However, Colombian fans rooted for 1998's champion, Argentinean Paola Suárez who eventually won the singles trophy in 2002. Rita Kuti Kis from Hungary was the runner up.

Austria celebrated Patricia Wartush's victory

   

The Colsanitas Cup continued to evolve and went from Tier IV to Tier IV B category, thereby gathering 15 of the world's Top 100 players in the main lineup. Sylvia Plischke from Austria, then No. 39 in the world ranking was the favorite at the start, but fellow countrywoman Patricia Wartusch won the title. Thousands of people followed the tournament point by point on the Internet.

The winner of the 1996 edition, her 1999 victory enabled Fabiola Zuluaga to include her first title obtained in a WTA Tour cup in her record. The Colombian Tennis Academy was the venue for this tournament, which gathered Top 100 players such as Fang Li from China (ranked 40th in the WTA's ranking).

The Sixth Edition of the Colsanitas Cup was the first WTA circuit competition held in Latin America and meant a new achievement by Colsanitas in international women's tennis. This edition gathered players ranked among the world's top 150. Colombian Fabiola Zuluaga made it to the quarterfinal, and Mariana Mesa, then in the junior category, made it to the eighth-finals.

Fourth Edition of the Colsanitas Cup: Fabiola Zuluaga wins the title

   

Colsanitas' effort was further rewarded on this occasion. The Colsanitas Cup became a US$50,000 tournament and this time the title went to young Fabiola Zuluaga from Colombia. At 17, the Colombian player, a member of Colsanitas' team won her second professional tournament facing opponents ranked among the world's best 150 players.

1995

Third Edition of the Colsanitas Cup:

   

The project aimed at consolidating a women's tennis team was starting to take shape and Colsanitas doubled its professional tournament's prize purse in order to give Colombian players better opportunities. This was the first challenge for the national players against great tennis figures, as they had to face opponents ranked among the world's top 200, such as Argentinean María José Gaidano and Brazilians Luciana Tella and Andrea Vieira. Fabiola Zuluaga succeeded in making it to the second round and Ximena Rodríguez was the doubles runner up.
